From a young age, I have been fascinated by anatomy, mostly human but also the similarities and differences between human and animal internal forms. I recently started embroidering as a way to express my creativity as well as collecting old medical literature. I found that the two could be paired so beautifully and this is what led me to create my first piece, the Whale Forelimb. I've always seen old medical illustrations as pieces of art in their own right, but turning them into embroidery gives them a new, tactile, life. By turning them into something that jumps from the medium you're able to see the intricacies of each bone or tissue. This is why I love creating these pieces as it gives these old drawings from textbooks a new audience.
