Outside In began in 2006 as a project founded and delivered by Marc Steene as part of the Learning and Community programme at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.

Outside In’s first open art exhibition was held in 2007 and featured 100 artists from across Sussex. By 2012, the project had gone national, growing significantly to engage more than 1,500 artists and 13,000 audience members.

In 2014 the project expanded its reach into the international art world; Outside In joined the European Outsider Art Association and presented work for the first time at the Paris outsider Art Fair.

In 2016, following celebrations to mark the project’s highly successful first decade, it was agreed by Pallant House Gallery's Board of Trustees that Outside In should become an independent charity. In 2017 Outside In joined Arts Council England’s National Portfolio.
