Gold Run: Remix is an installation inspired by Gold Run and the history of the Paralympic Games by Outside In artist James Lake produced over a weeks residency in Dilston Grove, Southwark Park, London. James Lake has been mentored through the project by Turner Prize nominated sculptor, Richard Wilson, and the Director of CGP London, Ron Henocq.
The installation combines James Lakes’s stunning cardboard sculpture of a runner preparing for a race confronted by hurdles representing the many different barriers that disabled people face in sport and life and a seemingly impossible track. The sounds of the race, produced by sound designer Toby Salmon, provide a dramatic aural landscape to the installation. The runner is a universal figure representing the desire to finish a race, no matter what is in the way. “I have created a life sized Paralympic running figure made from cardboard. The figure is poised in a starting block position at the beginning of a race track which is designed to represent a journey faced with hurdles. In one instance these are sport related, but they also represent the barriers to success and achievement. Ultimately it is moving towards recognition and acceptance in wider society.” James Lake
