From October 19 – 22, Outside In returned to the Outsider Art Fair for the fourth time, taking work by artists James Alison, Aradne, Manuel Bonifacio, Rakibul Chowdhury, Dan Duggan, Genesis Khan, Donna Kuhn, Chris Neate, Martin Phillimore, David Puttick and Chaz Waldren.

Outside In joined 33 other galleries, projects and organisations from 22 cities and eight different countries at Hotel du Duc for the fifth anniversary of the Fair in Paris – a key date on the outsider art calendar. The Fair was a great success, with an increase of 24% in attendance compared to last year – and lots of sales for Outside In! Sharing the French capital for one weekend every year with international art fair Foire internationale d’art contemporain (FIAC), the Outsider Art Fair offers an inspiring alternative insight into contemporary work being created across the globe. It showcases important pieces by key outsider artists, bringing together top players in the outsider art field, including artists, gallerists, academics, art historians and collectors.

Work by Outside In artists included new pieces by David Puttick, filled with hidden faces, Dan Duggan’s haunted heads, James Alison’s line drawings of birds, and Aradne’s incredibly popular embroidered Witchdoctors and birds. There was also work by familiar Fair favourites Manuel Bonifacio, Martin Phillimore and Albert on the stall, as well as Rakibul Chowdhury’s portfolio of famous people.

Outside In’s artists were in good company, with stalls from all over the world coming together to showcase work by some of the most famous outsider artists – including Henry Darger, Willem van Genk and Carlo Zinelli, along with a special curated space put together from Daniel Cordier’s renowned collection of Art Brut, and a programme of events and talks that added context to the current world of outsider art. New exhibitors joined Paris stalwarts at the Fair this year, including the Donald Ellis Gallery from New York, the Outsider Art Museum from Amsterdam, and La Fabuloserie Galerie from Paris.

On the opening night, the buzz in the air was palpable, with artists, curators, collectors, gallerists and all-round art lovers exploring what this year’s incarnation of the Fair had to offer. Many of the artists being exhibited were also enjoying the Fair, including friends of Outside In Cathy Ward and Carlo Keshishian, who were sharing their inspiration and motivation with curious visitors. Outside In artists Rakibul Chowdhury and Genesis Khan both visited their exhibited works, soaking up the atmosphere of the Fair and enjoying seeing their work included in such a prestigious event.

A highlight for the Outside In team every year, the Fair offers the opportunity for us to share the incredible work of our talented artists and raise the profile of the project internationally. It is a great chance to meet artists, gallerists and collectors from around the world, and to have interesting discussions about the wider field of outsider art and where we might fit into that. We are always so proud of (but not surprised!) how popular the diverse work of Outside In’s artists is at the Fair, and are humbled by the continuing passion and motivation of all of the artists we work with – and the Fair is a great place to hear this from people from all corners of the globe! A big thank you to all of the artists who exhibited with us this year, and here’s to next year!
