The Octopus’ Garden is in its new home

Artist Julia Oak, volunteer Peter Baker and the Outside In team went along to the Aldingbourne Country Centre on Wednesday 17 August 2016 to install ‘The Octopus’ Garden’ yarnbombing in its new home. We were joined at the centre by Aldingbourne’s resident art group and their art group based at Number 73 in Bognor Regis. Luckily we had sunshine all day and here you can see the results from everyone’s hard work! This is in the woodland area at the Centre, which is free for everyone to visit, so do pop along if you get a chance.

The initial yarnbombing project grew out of Julia’s participation in the Outside In: Step Up Interpreting Collections programme, which provides artists with the training and support to develop their research and interpretation skills. Several sessions were held at Pallant House Gallery to create everything that was needed. The sessions were non-prescriptive and enabled people to learn new skills in knitting and crochet, whilst building confidence in individuals and creating connections with local community groups.

All of the knitted, crocheted and woven items that you can see pictured here were created during drop-in sessions at Pallant House Gallery and by people from the following groups: Aldingbourne: Creative Art Studio and Earthworks, Chichester Lunch Club, Pallant House Gallery’s Community Programme, Starburst Arts, and WRAP at The Boys Club.
