From the artist:
It is made in response to a bed of ivy within a stone flower bed in my local environment. I was so struck by the way that the beautiful ivy had almost completely embodied the brick/stone flower bed outside a building. It was a carpet of green, rich and cascading over a solid and harsh structure. I loved the depression in the middle of the bed. So I aimed to replicate this with my piece making it with steel mesh, a part wooden support underneath and layers of canvas and paint over the top. The depression or 'Recess' ('Lacuna') became the main point of intention in the piece. I chose to colour it with bold colours that I used to stain it rather than try to suggest it was the ivy that I saw.
