I am a self taught artist who paints using oils. I paint intuitively, noticing the sensation as the paint moves across the canvas. I use the process as a form of sensory soothing; I love the tactile nature of oils and use my hands to paint everything but the fine detail.
My work explores the emergence of light from a dark surface. I start from a black-painted canvas and build up layers of colour and light. This is built upon, and reflects, my journey of inner healing. My paintings have a fantasy, otherworldly feel and a whimsical nature that aims to connect with our inner child. I wish to provide even the briefest moment of pure escapism from this chaotic world.
I am strongly influenced by the seasons and how they affect the nature of light. I take my inspiration from long walks in nature where I am invigorated by experiencing the elements in their pure form. I channel these experiences into my work with the aim of creating feelings of peace and serenity in the viewer; I want them too to feel soothed by the soft glow of the moon and by sunlight streaking through leaves; the energy of darkening clouds and the calmness of still water, the emergence of stars into a clear evening sky.
During the winter of 2020-1 I received a Creative Award Scheme grant from mental health charity SANE to hire studio space at Aire Place Studios. It is here that I was able to create my most recent body of work, focusing on acceptance of darkness and yearning for the returning of light. This culminated in a solo exhibition, curated by Magical Women as part of their Imbolc celebration festival, ‘Into The Woods’. This work focuses on misty winter skies laden with stars, and through it I intend to convey a sense of a sense of comfort in aloneness under the vastness of the sky.
