At first glance the paintings look like abstract patterns, but they all feature hidden figures. By superimposing line drawings of natural features over line drawings of figures (usually my life drawings) I create a set of unusual, biomorphic shapes. Then I erase or enhance some of the lines (except for the ones defining the dominant figure) so that animals and faces may appear as “extras” in the overall image. How I paint the shapes dictates how much the figure is separated from the “ground” – ie how easy it is to spot the figure(s). My work is an exploration of how we perceive reality.
