With my paintings / drawings and video work I express a wide range of ideas and concepts.
Most frequently my paintings explore an emotional or mental landscape either through portraying a heightened or distorted vision of figures / symbols or images. Symbols are important in my work and I am influenced by surrealism and analytical psychology in the sense that I want my work to uncover aspects of my unconscious as well as the wider collective unconscious. I want to create a mood and uncover some kind of core underlying reality behind the images I create –wherever that be an emotional, intellectual or even spiritual mood.
Some specific artists and movements which have inspired me include the work of the German Expressionists (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckman, Otto Dix et al) , 20th century abstract painters, abstract expressionism, as well as the work of painters working in expressionist figuration –Francis Bacon, Oskar Kokoschka, De Kooning.
My process is a mixture of improvisation and planning , I do often produce sketches as a base to work from, but will take paintings in a different direction if I feel that the image or the mood I am trying to present will benefit from it. I also love the materiality of paint so tend to work with paint in a rather expressionist / sculptural manner , scraping, splattering and scratching into the surface etc.
Ultimately I want to create images that provoke feeling and reflection, I am not concerned necessarily with weaving a narrative as such, but provoking thought and emotion is an aim.
