From the artist:
I have been meditating everyday for over 20 years. Contrary to general opinion that meditation is a passive activity, to reach a peaceful and blissful state, for me its the complete opposite!!! It's a deeply engaging activity with your inner self and over time you may find almost an emptiness within. In that space is the foundation for creative thought and intuition. It's like discovering a new channel on a different frequency. Partly this was one of the reasons to paint this portrait. The intense vibrant background is full of energy and activity, it represents what I am experiencing during meditation. In contrast to the activity of the bright red background, I created a very delicate and subtle painting approach to the figure to give the viewer a sense of stillness. The other reason for this painting was to portrary my self in a neutral almost expressionless way. Portraiture is traditionally used to express emotions through the gaze or eyes of the sitter. Without that there is nothing for the viewer to engage with. My eyes are shut and I have a neutral expression. Also I was keen to express an ambigious or neutral gender too, so I tied my hair up and gave my figure a muscular tonal quality.
