Initially I did not write any artist statement other than saying that such a thing was not needed as my art should speak for itself . A few days later I re-read it and thought that it could be mis-interpreted and seen as a form of arrogance, so I have expanded a little bit on what I am trying to do every time I set out to produce a piece of artwork. For me, such an undertaking is often about trying to manage meaningfully a mish mash of competing contents such as distorted memories, subjective observation, genuine and irrational fears but also prejudices and wishful thinking. Sometimes, I must confess, I indulge myself by seeking luscious tones just for the pleasure of it or by wanting to make all colours “sing”. The result of all these factors is not always what I intended in the first place but the whole journey is invariably a struggle; sometimes it is also real fun in the end.

A winning combination : strong narrative, a sharp eye, quality draughtsmanship, and Gallic wit.

What a talent! Detailing is exquisite. Love the energy in Bal Nocturne; and the humour/social statement in Mother Superior.

So much detail, especially Bal nocturne . . . but my favourite has to be Mother Superior . . . and looks on their faces. Your art is wonderful.

We love the warmth, quirky humour and joyous quality of these prints. There is a real narrative going on in them all. The prints are the work of a playwright as well as an artist of great giftedness. We have Bal Nocturne on one of the walls in our dining room and it makes us smile as we eat. It truly lifts the heart to see it every day. The detail in it is astonishing.
      Congratulations to a stunning artist!

These etchings have immense detail and caricature-like portraits that must have taken ages to complete. The process of print-making is mastered to perfection in this show of great art.

Claude, your talent is extraordinary; in fact excellent.

The effort to first think of a scene, then draw it with the feeling and atmosphere that suggests reality; sometime cheeky is a very rare gift.
I enjoyed all works; particularly Nocturne.
          Best Regards

Chrissy Combes introduced me to these marvellous prints. Oh, my goodness! And I do really like them. Thank you, Chrissy. But above all, thank you, Claude. I do not know you – though over the years, Chrissy and David have spoken of you – but I worked at MGGS, with your wife, Mary. These prints are superb. Joyous. Love that quirky, illustrative sort of drawing, that tells in one picture such an intriguing story. A real narrative. Yet they are also real drawings. With a delight in the manner and means. Not that flatness of some genre narrative paintings. A great talent.

Claude Pendaries is my father. I am proud of him for so many reasons – his artwork is just one of them.

Claude, your artwork is wonderful! There’s atmosphere in each one, and such variations of skills.
            Bravo!

Such great level of detail in your drawings, absolutely stunning work. My personal favorite has to be “Bal nocturne”.
