I create illustrative pictures in mixed media textiles inspired by myth, legend and literature.
I want to capture the sense of wonder our ancestors felt at the mystical, natural world that surrounded them using hand-dyed fabric grounds, printing and painting, machine embroidery, layering and embellishment. I am fascinated by detail and depth and magical realism – my creatures inhabit our world, not some faraway, fantastical place.
This is a story about stories, especially the archetypical, deeply resonating ones like faery tales and folklore. It’s about lost, esoteric and occult knowledge that the modern world dismisses, and how that connects us to the natural – and supernatural – world.
I love the idea of ‘little mysteries’ – the hidden realm of faery, shy and secretive magical creatures, spirits of wood, water and stone. I love the stories that are told about them, not just traditionally but from the imagination of modern writers as well. I love what they tell us about our need for magic, mystery and a sense of connection to the land, even today.
I don’t believe that faery tale, myth and legend are just for children. I believe they tap into our need for a deeper picture of the world than science provides – a need for mystery and things that aren’t explained but are understood in the bones. And a need for connection with the natural, wild world that so many of us are disconnected from in our daily lives.
But this is also a story about fun and conversations with goblins and treasure seeking and not taking all this stuff too seriously, while allowing the possibilities of truths hidden within. It’s about experiments and the good bits, the bad bits and the ugly bits that did not work.
IT IS MY STORY AND I GET TO WRITE IT.
