From the artist:
Highly complex relic piece with layers of built up impasto, and also translucent layers, with hints of colours emerging from the blackened ground. A painting about resisting against darkness in life, making do with what one has and still finding a bit of happiness where you can no matter how tough it gets. I traveled to North Wales all around Cwmorthin where the ruins of the old mining village and mines are. I have researched/ read up on that period of history and how brutal life was for the miners, so much so that one of the mines was known as 'The Slaughterhouse', living conditions were grim. But there was a Cwmorthin choir and chapel there and much comradery in the living quarters in the evenings. So this painting is about imagining the miners singing together in a darkened existence and finding that bit of happiness.
