From the artist:
This relic like mixed media piece is based on North Wales, but with a specific sense of Cwmorthin in N. Wales. There is an evocation of archaeological excavation and the present and past in the same place. I was thinking about the brutal mining history there and what was known as The Slaughterhouse, where many men lost their lives, and there are abstracted meat carcasses hanging up beneath the layer of paint. Also, I wanted to evoke the sensation of walking on slate and the physical experience of walking through Cwmorthin as well as the ancient wars in N. Wales. But essentially the painting is transformed into an object that has its own life and entity, appreciated for its colours, texture and shapes; but everything in the painting has meaningfully derived from a sense of place.
