From the artist:
This is a relic-like abstracted collage painting that features irregular edges and a worn, weathered, scratched and textured surface: referencing the ancient history and aesthetic old peeling weathered walls all around Rome. The relic object like quality of this piece as the title also emphasizes, is to also make you aware that you are looking at what is essentially a 2D abstract painting, which is its own entity. My paintings are shaped by a sense of place: history, temperature, textures, colours, etc. I started on a hot rose red ground, so the heat remains intensified everywhere in the painting, and in places it shows through. The hot blue and red strokes that come from the sky and elsewhere into the foreground are describing how the summer Rome heat enveloped me. The painting has a dusty, dirty and old feel which was the experience I had of Rome in the old streets. It uses many different applications: from glazes, collage, incised lines, rips, creases, washes, impasto etc.
