From the artist:
My paintings are shaped by a sense of place: the temperature, colours, textures, history, etc. Here the oven-like intense heat of Rome in the summer is evoked, even in the shadows! My paintings now balance the spontaneity and freshness of my Cyprus works with a sense of layered history in the painting. The scratches overlaying this work refer to the sense of history that is always palpable and seen across Rome, as if this is a worn and weathered relic. The scratches also refer to an old wall I saw in Rome which had hundreds of layered graffitied scratched messages and tags all over the wall, which was aesthetically pleasing to me.
