I was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder almost 22 years ago, aged 20 years old, when first admitted to a psychiatric ward. Although my first admission was triggered by a family bereavement, I am convinced that the underlying cause of my illness stems from a deep-rooted low self-image and low self-esteem that I’ve had ever since I can remember.
Over the years I’ve had several subsequent admissions to psychiatric wards and have been able to access art therapy provision through my love of art. Being able to express very personal pain through my art work has been a significant contributing factor in the healing process for me.
More recently, I am very grateful to have access to the ‘Arts and Minds’ services that have kindly allowed me space to continue my creativity. There are often days when I arrive feeling very low and tearful and yet, after a morning spent drawing or painting, I leave feeling significantly better!
