My journey as an artist began in 1990 when I had to give up my business due to chronic illness. My art has become an integral part for my search for meaning and purpose. In 1998 I graduated with Fine Art B.A. (honours) 1:1 and have continued with courses and funding awards since to develop my art and my practice. I have exhibited mainly across South England with particular interest in the ‘art and health’ arena.
I aim to create a sense of mystery in my abstract paintings, attempting to capture something beyond what I see with emotive and spiritual content. I’m interested in opposites and spatial relationships and predominant themes which reoccur are ‘inside and outside’ and ‘treasures’. Taking an intuitive stance I work spontaneously allowing content and imagery to emerge whilst developing a sense of structure and working with colour relationships.
As a material’s led artist I need to make as well as paint. Using mixed media I employ a layering process of building, editing, scraping back and reworking and aim for rich surfaces and intangible qualities I am powerfully drawn to.
