I began to read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass for inspiration that might develop into a painting. This approach of reading a story and trying to translate it into a “realistic” painting is new to me, while it provides a subject it comes with inhibitions. In my efforts to stay true to the text I constantly read passages, for example, “Drink Me” ,
I did some drawing in ink and went back to reading the passage several times to get inspiration for the next piece of drawing.
These paintings are my original efforts while paying homage to the author Lewis Caroll and original illustrator John Tenniel.
I hope you the viewer, are drawn into Alice’s frightful yet wonderful journey.
You can see the Alice Suite and my recent Fairytale Suite inspired by Charles Perrault who was the originator of our much loved classic fairytales including Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. He served in the court of Louis X1V and wrote stories for his children. I try to remain true to the original story while also adding my own imagination.
Please look on Saatchiart.com / Marianne Sturtridge to see my paints and ceramics. I hope you are inspired too.
