I find that art is a great way of getting things out that I find difficult to express verbally. I see my role as an artist is to question the norm, to make the world more beneficial, spreading messages of hope to show that disability and mental health is not a barrier.
I work with lots of different materials and see how far I can push them, I like to mix traditional techniques and new materials, like – stitching onto images, printed on paper. I use textiles, paint, clay, recycled and found objects in my collage work.
I am inspired by old buildings, nature, other cultures and artists, musicians and poetry and current affairs.
I would like my audience to think about the processes and thoughts that went behind the making of my work, especially the pieces with a social or environmental message, and hopefully appreciate the quirky and unusual mix of materials.
Sometimes when I start creating a piece of work I can feel low, but by the time I finish I am at peace, hopefully this is a journey that you can share with me.
