From the artist:
Any mention of ‘environment’ leads me to think of the damage human activity causes in this world. This picture was inspired by photographs of the aftermath of an oil spill off Sakhalin Island in Russia in November 2015, when the tanker Nadezhda ran aground. Though many cormorants were rescued, only nine survived cleaning and rehabilitation. Other seabirds, and sealions were also harmed and the authorities were criticised for their slow response.
