From the artist:
Re-Renaissance is a film and performance I produced, filmed, directed and made the fashion for in 2017. In the words of Edward Said, “Ideas, cultures, and histories cannot seriously be understood or studied without their force, or more precisely their configurations of power, also being studied.” My cultural identity and ethnicity has always been the foundation for my studio practice, I was initially hesitant to explore Postcolonial Theory because of the irony of my work being assessed by western academic standards, yet leaving this theory out of the equation of my practice felt equally wrong. Therefore, I found a safe space drawing upon scholarly voices and similar practices to myself in an attempt to explain my more visceral approach to the theory and my understanding of colonisation’s consistent legacy applied to aspirational silhouettes and lifestyles within the present day. I aim to voice a dialogue on my own relationship to colonialism and cultural identity, through the medium of symbolism, materiality and silhouette.
