I find a pleasure in the arts in general, but thoroughly enjoy and gain benefit from the act of mixing colours and applying paint with a brush to a surface. I mostly use acrylics for their ease of use, but have relished experimenting with other mediums.
There have been periods where my mental health has impacted negatively on my appreciation and ability to engage artistically.
I have studied some art history and find I resonate mostly with paintings by the Impressionists, the Abstract Expressionists and together with the natural world, these have been influences. Following several fortunate visits to Australia, I have also found aboriginal dot paintings inspiring.
I am lucky enought to have regular access to the wonderful supportive atmosphere of the workers at Creative Response, under the guidance of Mike Prinsep, which has been hugely beneficial. My first day there I remember it was a struggle even to produce a small drawing, but now I am managing to finish and display paintings which is most pleasing.
I am also lucky to have the support of my wonderful sister Sian, whose shared care of my elderly father gives me time to indulge my artistic endeavours.
