I have severe anxiety and visual processing difficulties. This makes it difficult for me to see beyond details to the big picture, which means I can easily feel overwhelmed.
In my art, I often attempt to challenge this either by working in an abstract way, or by producing a single piece in multiple smaller sections – for example, combining a number of panels to form one image, or a group of items in a single sculpture. This allows me to work more intuitively and respond to the work as it develops: it also stops me controlling the process too closely. Although I start each piece with a rough feeling or image in mind, it very rarely ends up where I expect – and neither do I.
In terms of medium, I am very sensitive to texture and enjoy carving and engraving, from fully three dimensional ceramic, through relief work to scraperboard.
