Outside In has named Beth Hopkins as its new ambassador assistant. The role will see Beth work with the artist development coordinator to develop the programme of ambassadors, as well as provide support, assist with training and be the main point of contact for ambassadors.
Here Beth tells us more about her journey as an artist and her hopes for the future.
Hi everyone! I'm Beth, your new ambassador assistant. It'll be my job to support all our wonderful Outside In ambassadors and help to recruit and train new ambassadors. I hope all ambassadors can be proud of being part of Outside In and spread the word about our work.
For me, Outside In is so special because it reaches artists who may not otherwise have opportunities to be seen and welcomes them into a supportive and friendly community.
A bit about me – I'm an Outside In artist, and I first made my profile on the website in 2016. Since then have taken part in Radical Craft, Step Up and now I'm a member of the Artists Advisory Group. I'm also an ambassador! I've worked in charities for about a decade as an administrator, now I run art workshops and volunteer at Bethlem Gallery in Beckenham.
At the moment in my spare time I'm doing a lot of collage and weaving. I love trying out new processes and materials, and a large part of my inspiration comes from that. As a child I loved drawing and painting, but it was when I attended a mental health recovery art studio in Surrey that I really started taking art seriously. Recently I was commissioned by Bethlem Gallery to make a piece to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS. I experimented with plaster, concrete and resin to make a piece exploring psychiatric medication. This year I've completed a research project at the Wellcome Collection exploring the Adamson Collection of asylum art, which was fascinating.
Without Outside In I would probably not consider myself to be a 'real' artist. I hope to continue developing as an artist and see where it takes me! I also look forward to seeing where your artistic journey takes you.
