Shape has made it to the finals of the Jubilee People’s Millions, to be shown on ITV’s London Tonight on 27 June. We will compete in a public vote for £60,000 of funding.
The Jubilee People’s Millions supports charities that have a great idea for a project to improve the lives of people in the community and get local people working together. Shape’s project (Shape Diamonds) will enable disabled Londoners to participate fully in the exciting arts and cultural events which will be taking place in 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and Cultural Olympiad.
There are many Londoners living with disabilities or sensory impairments who due to various barriers – lack of accessible transport or individual support – feel isolated in their homes and cannot participate in events that many take for granted.
Shape will organise visits to cultural events as chosen by the members of the club and ensure that all members’ access needs are met. We will bring together the local community and inspire engagement with the arts in this unique year of cultural events. Without the project, many disabled people could remain isolated, unable to enjoy the benefits of a social and cultural life.
Shape Diamonds Club will train 100 volunteers to provide direct support to over 1,000 disabled people. The project will transform people’s lives – as one disabled beneficiary said “Going to the theatre, being able to laugh and relax is better than any medicine”.
Public votes will decide who is awarded the money, so your support is crucial to our success. A telephone voting line will be open from 9am-midnight on the 27th June and each phone can make ten calls (Calls cost 11p per call from BT landlines. Calls from other networks may be higher and from mobile phones will be considerably more). We will not know the telephone number until the 27th June; we will release the number on the day, but to be sure of getting the details to you, we will be collecting mobile numbers and email addresses. Please text JPM to 0762 480 9145 or email firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll update you on voting day. Alternatively, you can buy the Daily Mirror on the 27th or watch London Tonight at 6pm that night.
