With the deadline fast approaching, this week’s blog post is devoted to our latest opportunity; Outside In and HOUSE Biennial will commission one Outside In artist based in the South East of England to create a new artwork – in any medium –  as part of HOUSE Biennial this October. The commissioned artwork must be inspired by the theme of ‘excess’ and the work of the British contemporary artist Laura Ford.

HOUSE Biennial is Brighton & Hove’s contemporary visual arts festival. For each festival HOUSE commissions an internationally regarded Invited Artist as well as selecting for commission a range of artists at varying career stages. Previous years’ Invited Artists have been Gillian Wearing, Nathan Coley and Yinka Shonibare MBE. In 2017 the HOUSE Biennial lead artist is Laura Ford.

Laura Ford is a contemporary artist working in a wide range of media, from bronze sculpture through to painting, drawing, ceramics, sewing and modelling in wax and clay.  Her work often has a fairy tale feel to it and she mixes bitter and sweet emotions to explore the darkness and humour in these stories.  Laura is creating new artwork for HOUSE 2017 which will take inspiration from the Royal Pavilion Brighton and their ceramics collection.  Her work will also relate to the theme of ‘excess’.

Outside In and HOUSE Biennial are invited artists from across the South East who are registered with Outside In to apply for this commission. Artists are encouraged to explore the theme of ‘excess’ in whatever way means something to them.  This could include ideas around what it means to have ‘too much’ of something and the impact it can have personally, or how it feels to witness excess in wider society. Artwork in any medium will be considered.

The completed artwork will be exhibited at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton and this exhibition will include examples of Laura Ford’s work. The commissioned Outside In artist will also meet, and have the opportunity to discuss their work with, Laura herself.

There is a budget available of up to £3,000 for the successful artist to create the new work and there will be up to 8 weeks available for the the selected artist to produce it.

London-based artist Thompson Hall was the Outside In artist commissioned for the 2016 HOUSE festival. Thompson said the opportunity helped him to develop as an artist, thanks especially to the amount of support and help he received in creating his art work.  His series of paintings, a study of Brighton architecture called ‘Home Away From Home’, was exhibited at The Regency Townhouse in Brighton, 30 April – 29 May 2016. In the film below Thompson talks about his experience of the 2016 commission.
