Opportunity: Would you like to be a selector for Outside In?

Outside In is looking for artists who would like to be part of a selection panel for opportunities which the charity has coming up this year. Being a selector can give you an insight into the process of how and why artists and artworks are chosen. It can also be fun, something you can add to your CV and each selector will be paid £200.

About the Outside In selection process

Outside In has designed a programme within its website to provide a fair and transparent selection process. Outside In artists can submit artwork from their online gallery to be considered for exhibitions and other opportunities via the website. The programme enables a group of selectors to independently look at each work submitted, without knowing any details about the artist, and to score it against agreed criteria, which includes questions such as ‘does the work fit the theme?’ or ‘do I like it?’.

Each selection panel is different and will include a mix of people, someone from the partner organisation, an artist or a curator and an Outside In artist to ensure the artists’ voice is represented.

Selecting is done remotely using a laptop or a computer that is connected to the internet.

If you are going to be a selector for an opportunity it does mean that you cannot apply yourself.

Look Closer, Think Bigger at Fabrica Gallery

This is an exhibition at Fabrica Gallery in Brighton. The theme of this exhibition is large and miniature artworks and we are inviting artists to submit artworks that fit into either of these two categories. The exhibition will explore extremes of scale by creating small intimate spaces to display miniature work, contrasted with large artworks that resonate with Fabrica’s unique setting, a former Regency church in the heart of Brighton.

Selection dates: 20th – 26th April 2020

This opportunity might be of interest to you if:

  • You are an artist who works in large or small scale.
  • If you have exhibited in an exhibition that is similar
  • If you would like the experience of being a selector for Outside In and Fabrica

Residency at West Dean College –Coming Soon

West Dean College in Spring

Outside In is working in partnership with West Dean College of Arts and Conservation to provide a residency opportunity for Outside In artists. The call-out for this opportunity will be announced very shortly.

The selected artist will be invited to respond to the College’s Historic House, Collection and Archive as part of ‘Whose Heritage? Rethinking the West Dean Collection’, a project that questions the College’s colonial ties and asks how broader social and cultural engagement can help institutional ambitions and change. We particularly encourage applications for this residency from artists of Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, who would like to explore the artefacts in the collection and the ethics around the display and interpretation of these pieces.

Selection dates: 1st – 6th May 2020

This opportunity might be of interest to you if:

  • You have taken part in a similar research project
  • If you are interested in collections of artwork held by institutions
  • If you would like the experience of being a selector for Outside In and West Dean College

For this opportunity we encourage selectors who come from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

If you would like some more information or to apply for this, please contact Cornelia Marland. The deadline for the Fabrica opportunity is Tuesday 10th March 2020. The deadline for the West Dean College opportunity is Monday 16th March 2020.
