RIOTOUS NATURE: Original Pastel Drawings by Ben Wilson
September 20 – November 20, 2011
Upstairs at The Nellie Dean of Soho
89 Dean Street, Soho, London, W1D 3SU
Famous for the miniature masterpieces he paints on discarded gum on the streets of London, Ben Wilson is widely known as Chewing Gum Man. However, few people who stumble across the artist, sprawled out on the pavement, paintbrush in hand, are familiar with the other aspects of his work. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Wilsonʼs art was on a much larger scale. The majority of his time was spent in the woods of north London, making complex, carved creations from fallen trees and gathered wood, ranging from larger than life ï¬gurative sculptures to sprawling decorative arbours.
In 1999, Wilson embarked on a series of pastel drawings, each one a riot of colour, rich hues covering every inch of the paper. The threads that connects Wilsonʼs output are evident here – nature in all her glory and manʼs connection to his environment. The ï¬gures that inhabit this series of drawings are those that occupied the woods, their bodies exposed to nature, sometimes awkward, often playful, always articulating an intimate relationship with their surroundings.
Riotous Nature brings together for the ï¬rst time, 36 pastel drawings, each one a vivid, poetic ode to nature, joy and life.
